When Kanye dropped his 8th album last week, we all listened tentatively, praying to god that an any song with potential for awesomeness wouldn’t be ruined by the word poop (and maybe, secondly, praying that his politics wouldn’t infiltrate the songs to a point where we could no longer look the other way).
Did either of these happen? I don’t know. I have no obligation to listen considering this isn’t a music site.
Then why the hell are you talking about Kanye West? You may be asking.
Because that photo on the cover of his album was captured by none other than Mr. West himself.
Oh, he’s a photographer?
He used his wealth to buy a super nice camera?
Nah, he just used his iPhone; ’cause in this day and age, image quality in our devices is good enough that you can do such a thing.
The photograph in question is a landscape of mountains against a darkening sky somewhere near Jackson Hole, Wyoming. Written in a bright green scrawl on trop is, “I hate being Bi-Polar it’s awesome”.
Surprisingly, it wasn’t Kanye who made us aware of his feat (or whatever you want to call it). It was his boo thing, Kim Kardashian. She wrote on Twitter, along with a snippet of the photo:
“Kanye shot the album cover on his iPhone on the way to the album listening party ??????????????????????????.”
The photo isn’t bad, but you could say it lacks the clarity appropriate for such a beautiful landscape. In other words, it’s not doing the scenery justice. Maybe it’s a novel artistic approach and deserves further analysis—a dissection the message brought forth by Kanye, discovering connections between it and the album as a whole along with society beyond that. Or maybe Kanye just does what he wants and we shouldn’t think too much about it. Eh, you decide.
