How to Choose the Right Lens For Your Camera

Choosing the Right Lens For Your Camera.

The following is a guest post by Tony Northrup, author of Stunning Digital Photography, who has written this great article on picking the right lens for your camera. You can find more great tips in his book.

With hundreds of lenses to choose from, it can be hard to decide which lens is best for you. Below are some guidelines for choosing the right lens for your camera.

One of my biggest frustrations when I started shooting was that I couldn’t get the compositions I was looking for with just one lens. I’ve used everything from Nikon’s DX 18-55mm kit lens to its $4,000 800mm super-telephoto lens, and everything in between.

Here are some tips on how to pick the right lens for your camera.

Wide Angle Lens: If you want to make things look large or far away look small, then you need a wide angle lens (also known as a short focal length). The downside of wide angle lenses is that they have barrel distortion and corner softness which makes them bad for portraits or any other photos where you want straight lines to look straight. Wide angle lenses are great for landscapes, architecture, or family portraits where you can’t get everyone in frame without a wide angle lens….

The lens you choose makes a big difference to the photos you can take with your camera.

10 Tips For Choosing the Right Lens.

Choosing the right lens for your camera can be a daunting task. There are so many different lenses available and it can be hard to know what you need. Here are some tips that will help you choose the best lens for your needs.

1. What is your main purpose for buying the lens? If you are looking to use the lens mainly for taking pictures of people then a normal zoom lens would be ideal. If you are going to be using the lens for landscapes or buildings then you should get a macro lens.

2. How much light do you need to take photos? This is an important question to ask yourself as each lens has a different amount of light that it allows through. A good rule of thumb is that if you are in a room lit by a 100 watt bulb then you probably want to have a lens with at least f/2.8 aperture. If you are outside then you probably want a lens with f/4.0 aperture.

3. Do you want to use the lens for close up shots or do you want to use it for more distant shots? A macro lens is great for close up shots whereas a zoom lens is better for longer distance shots.

4. Do you need a lens with image stabilization? This is a great feature if you are using the lens for sports or other action shots. It is also useful if you are photographing moving objects such as cars, boats or airplanes.

5. How many people do you plan on taking pictures of? If you only want to take pictures of one person then a normal zoom lens will work just fine. However if you are planning on taking pictures of groups of people then a macro lens would be better.

6. How much money do you have to spend? This is a very important factor when choosing a lens. If you don’t have a lot of money to spend then a normal zoom lens may be all you need. On the other hand if you have a large budget to spend then a macro lens may be the way to go.

7. Will you be using the lens for still images or video? If you are planning on using the lens for video then you should definitely get a lens with image stabilization.

8. Do you plan on sharing your photos online? If you are planning on sharing your photos online then you should look into getting a lens that offers better quality.

9. How big of a lens do you need? The size of your lens depends on how close you want to get to your subjects. A wide angle lens is perfect for capturing a wide area but a telephoto lens is better for getting closer to your subjects.

10. What type of photography are you planning on doing? If you are planning on shooting wildlife then a lens with a wider aperture is needed. If you are going to photograph a cityscape then a lens with a narrower aperture is better.

Conclusion

If you’re not using the right lens for your camera, you’re missing out on great photo opportunities.
